Global Handwashing Day

Lifebuoy’s global mission is to increase awareness about the importance of handwashing as an effective way to prevent diseases and save lives. This has been part of Unilever DNA when lifebuoy soap was launched in 1894 to combat cholera in Victorian England.

Today, Lifebuoy has a global mission to change the hygiene behavior of millions by raising awareness that many stomach borne illnesses can be easily prevented by the simple act of regular and thorough hand washing. Handwashing with soap is a proven, cost effective, and accessible health intervention.

Lifebuoy has taken advocacy to a new level, by founding Global Handwashing Day. In 2011 alone, 25 million pledged their hands in return for Lifebuoy’s commitment to bring handwashing programs to more and more children. Lifebuoy is committed to changing the hygiene behavior of 1 billion people by 2020.
